Markel-jdowney newsletter.JPGMarkel is a holding company for insurance, reinsurance, and investment operations around the world. Headquartered in Richmond, Virginia and founded in 1930, Markel reports its ongoing underwriting operations in three segments, and products originate from four insurance divisions and one reinsurance division. Markel Ventures, a subsidiary that makes strategic investments in companies outside of the insurance marketplace, is another important component of our business.

In each of our businesses, we seek to deliver innovative products and responsive customer service so that we can be a market leader. Our time horizon is long-term, our underwriting approach is disciplined, and our focus is on continuously improving the quality of the customer experience. Our financial goals are to earn consistent underwriting and operating profits and to combine those profits with superior investment returns to build shareholder value.

Markel is #335 on the Fortune 500 list, has 73 locations in 21 countries, and employs approximately 18,600 associates worldwide.

As the Director – Small Business Sales, West Territory, Jeff reports directly to the West Territory Executive, Wendy Houser. The West Territory includes 23 states and is responsible for approximately $2 billion of Markel Specialty premium.

He is a 3rd generation insurance professional. My grandmother, and father were both on the agency side of the business in California.

When he is not busy running the territory,  he loves hiking, golf, music (plays clarinet and sax), and is a passionate traveler.
Jeff’s committee involvement and accomplishments includes the IIABCal Board of Directors, representing all associate members as a NIIA Platinum Industry Partner. He is a huge fan of the Big “I”.

He shares why other carriers, agency owners, and producers should get involved.

“Our industry would not be where it is today without the passionate leaders who came before us. It is critical to be involved because the association supports education and professional development of its members as well as being a force representing insurance industry political interests at the state and national levels. It is also a wonderful source to make friends and network with other industry professionals.

The favorite NIIA or Big I event I have participated in, was probably the cork pull. However, I really look forward to the convention every year because I don’t get out and see agents on a day to day basis any longer. It keeps me grounded to what is happening at the local and state levels as well as maintaining long, wonderful personal relationships.”

Something you might not know about Jeff is that he used to play clarinet in a Dixieland Jazz Band and have traveled to all 50 states as well as 27 countries.
